It's dead-rubber time again. Since MS Dhoni became captain, India have won seven of the eight bilateral ODI series they have played. Keeping aside the series against England, Australia and West Indies - where last matches could not be played out - India have played four dead-rubbers and lost all four. With Dhoni coming back from his ban, India would want to set that blip right in Delhi.

The 2-1 scoreline is not unexpected given the way India have pushed Sri Lanka to the brink in all but one game - a Twenty20 - played in the limited-overs leg of the tour. But now, with the home team missing two match-winners, a hurting Sri Lanka have a realistic chance of leveling the series.

This will be the first time since MS Dhoni's debut in 2004 that India play an ODI without him and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni has often said that missing Yuvraj is a big blow, so how India cope with the loss of their captain and best batsman in ODIs in addition to Yuvraj will be crucial.

The tour has seen so many players succumbing to injuries it's a surprise the rest have managed to get so far. Sri Lanka have lost the services of Thilan Thushara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando and Angelo Mathews. Nuwan Kulasekara missed the Tests but returned for the shorter versions. Yuvraj had a recurrence of his finger injury and has been indefinitely ruled out. Sreesanth is yet to feature after getting the flu, while Lasith Malinga overcame it in time for the last game. Thankfully, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virender Sehwag overcame minor scares.

Mahela Jayawardene: Sri Lanka's former captain has experienced an unusual run of form in 2009 where he either gets a start and can't convert or falls early. In 23 innings this year, he has a century and three half-centuries; his next-highest score is 33 and three times he's been dismissed without scoring. The law of averages says it's about time for a century, but it will be against a side off which he has only one hundred in 55 innings. To do so, Jayawardene will need to get over his struggles against India's spinners, who have now dismissed him five times - six if you count the run out in Rajkot during a Ravindra Jadeja over - from his seven ODI innings against them in 2009.

Gautam Gambhir: He's been India's most consistent Test batsman this year but his figures aren't so hot in ODIs. His only century came against Sri Lanka in the first week of February and since then Gambhir has managed four half-centuries. For a determined player, who has made a superb effort to convert fifties into centuries in Tests, changing a habit that hampered him for some time, doing the same in ODIs must be a goal. Given the nature of the Nagpur track - India eased past 350 runs when they played Australia here in October - it is tough to visualise one of the top three not getting a big score. Gambhir has been able to bat at the top in only ten of 20 innings in 2009; if he gets the chance to bat at No. 3 tomorrow, count on a significant innings.

After a one-sided Test series and an even Twenty20 contest, during which flat pitches and big bats rendered the spinners ineffective, India and Sri Lanka embark upon a five-match ODI series beginning in Rajkot. Chastened by a 2-0 defeat in the Tests, Sri Lanka have a shot at redemption during this final leg of the tour.

The focus will be on Kumar Sangakkara and how he backs his talk with leadership and runs - he did thump exceptional fifties in the Twenty20s. The most interesting sub-plots of the series, though, should be the return of Zaheer Khan to 50-over cricket, and Sanath Jayasuriya's expected move down to the middle order. Jayasuriya's equation in the middle order - where he has not batted regularly since the early 1990s - and his role with the ball as Sri Lanka nurse Muttiah Muralitharan back will be crucial if Sri Lanka are to compete with India. For Sri Lanka these five matches provide an opportunity to assess their one-day prospects and identify areas they need to work on.

India, despite their No. 2 ICC ranking, are not exactly bristling with confidence. They might have won 14 out of 23 completed ODIs this year, but are coming off a disappointing Champions Trophy and a home-series defeat to Australia. Sreesanth is surely out, and Yuvraj Singh is unlikely to play in the opener. That leaves a shaky middle order and a patchy bowling attack, neither of which fired cohesively against Australia. Zaheer and Harbhajan Singh's task of boosting India's bowling is now cut out.

Gary Kirsten, the India coach, had said after they were eliminated from the World Twenty20 that there were holes in the Twenty20 set-up and teams had worked out strategies to effectively negate India's strengths. The next World Twenty20 is in May 2010 and the opportunities to formulate, fine-tune and effect plans are limited.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, had a terrific World Twenty20 and were unbeaten until the final, which they lost to Pakistan. They were the tournament's most vibrant team: the evergreen Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan's daring improvisations gave them fast starts, while the combination of Murali, Mendis and Malinga was simply too much for most opponents to handle. Since then, however, Sri Lanka have lost three matches on the trot - one to Pakistan and two to New Zealand, that too at home.

India vs Srilanka 3rd Test Live Streaming

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 3rd Test Live Streaming Free Online from Mumbai Dec 2nd -6th, 2009. It couldn't have been scripted better. Murali Vijay entered the room as S Badrinath left it, and proceeded to take the place on the sofa vacated by his Tamil Nadu team-mate and former captain, the man under whom he made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. While Badrinath is yet to play a Test for India, Vijay is getting ready to play his second after an eventful debut against Australia last year in Nagpur.

India vs Srilanka 3rd Test Live Streaming

Vijay may be warming the bench for Gambhir, who will miss the final Test in Mumbai to attend his sister's wedding, but he believes Sehwag and Gambhir are India's most successful opening pair and that both have a solid temperament. His desire to score runs though, is immense.

"I want to prove myself each game I play, for my state or for India," Vijay said. "The only way I can do that is not think too much."

He said it was an "honour" to partner Sehwag at the top of the order as well. "Opening with him takes the pressure off you, because no bowler can stop him," Vijay said. "The way he approaches his game, he is mentally very strong and handles the situation the way he wants to. He talks about cricket a lot to lighten me up."

Vijay has been on the fringes of the Test side for the past year now and is the first-choice replacement for either Sehwag or Gambhir. He has already been part of four series in those twelve months including the latest against Sri Lanka.

Vijay has utilised his time as a reserve in a positive fashion. His priority was to focus on strengthening his temperament in all situations and Paddy Upton, India's mental conditioning coach, has been a big help. "He [Upton] has talked to me about how I could handle pressure. He has stressed on keeping things simple."

He has learnt various techniques of facing the new ball from coach Gary Kirsten as well. "The best part about him is you can go up to him and ask him for an extra knock. Being an opener he points out particular stuff and you can pick a lot of stuff from him considering he was such a successful opener."

Vijay has practised hard in the last week - getting throw-downs from the Kirsten-Upton pair in Kanpur, followed by an hour-long optional nets session on Monday in Mumbai under the coach's observation. His plans though, remained straight and simple. They were no different in Nagpur where he didn't get much time to make personal plans.

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test day 2 Live Streaming Free Online from Kanpur Nov 25th 2009. On a day like this stat-freaks were bound to have a field day: It was the first time India scored over 400 in a day, it was the highest opening partnership between Gambhir and Sehwag, and even, Muralitharan, at one point, was leaking at over 6 runs per over.

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Live Streaming

The most telling statistic was the spinners' figures. Sri Lanka had managed to keep the scoring rate down with the new ball but things went pear-shaped for them after the spinners were introduced, with Sehwag and Gambhir looting 73 runs off nine overs before lunch and little changing after the break. They weren't allowed to settle at all by the openers who lashed out at them with a calculated fury that was breathtaking to watch.

Gambhir went after Herath in his first over, hitting him for three boundaries: He whipped through covers, cut past point and stepped out to loft to the straight boundary. When Herath returned later, Gambhir went repeatedly down the track to drive him to distraction. If Gambhir reserved the best of his aggression for Herath, Sehwag went after Mendis in the first session and took care of Muralitharan in the second. Mendis floated a full toss, offered a long-hop and slid one down the leg side in his first spell and Sehwag sent each one to the boundary. The attacking spirit was best seen in the last over before lunch when Sehwag launched an offbreak from Mendis high over long-on. That aggression continued post lunch with Sehwag collecting five boundaries against Muralitharan: Two fierce off drives, an inside-edge, and a tuck to fine-leg boundary which brought up his hundred. He fell to Muralitharan though, against the run of play, trying to play an inside-out cover drive to a length delivery but failing to clear cover.

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Live Streaming Free Online from Kanpur Nov 24th -29th, 2009. Sri Lanka started brilliantly in the first Test but were thwarted first by Rahul Dravid and then the pitch in Ahmedabad. Momentum is an over-rated word, though, and both teams will start afresh in Kanpur.

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Live Streaming

Both teams had a few problems in the spin department: Sri Lanka went in with Rangana Herath, who was outstanding in the home series against Pakistan, but he couldn't do much damage here. Muttiah Muralitharan too wasn't at his best but Sri Lanka will still consider him as their first-choice spinner. Ajantha Mendis is likely to replace Herath as he is quicker through the air and the faster spinners have been more effective on Indian tracks.

For India, Harbhajan Singh is yet to recapture the form he showed on the tour of New Zealand, where he was at the top of his game. The usually skillful Amit Mishra had a poor game, struggling for control and looking out of sorts. Will India see it as a one-off bad game and trust Mishra with another? While Herath and Mishra didn't perform well the onus, though, would be on the senior spinners, Muralitharan and Harbhajan, to show the way.

Dilshan broke his nose after colliding with a team-mate during practice but he has recovered and will play. Fast bowler Dammika Prasad, however, is likely to miss out after suffering a grade one hamstring strain. He could be replaced by either Nuwan Kulasekara or Dilhara Fernando. The big question, though, will be over the second spinner to partner Murali. Will Mendis be given a chance?

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 2 Live Streaming Free Online from Ahmedabad Nov 17th, 2009. At the end of Day 1 India 385 for 6 (Dravid 177*, Dhoni 110, Yuvraj 68, Welegedara 3-75) v Sri Lanka .

India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 2 Live Streaming

Rahul Dravid's 27th century - and tenth 150-plus score - carried more intent than probably any of his Test innings, and helped by MS Dhoni's second century and Yuvraj Singh's seventh half-century, led India's remarkable comeback from 32 for 4 in the first half hour. Along the way, he took part in his 77th and 78th 100-run partnerships (both world records), scored more runs than he ever has in a day's play, crossed Steve Waugh to become the fifth-highest run-getter in Tests, reached 11,000 career runs, and most importantly undid the superb start that two rookies gave Sri Lanka. Chanaka Welegedara and Dammika Prasad were last-minute replacements for Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara, but they combined to give India flashbacks of their previous Test in Ahmedabad, when they were shot out for 76 by South Africa.

All four wickets for Sri Lanka had come attacking the stumps, and they continued doing just that. Dravid and Yuvraj, having realised this wasn't a beast to bat on, counterattacked. Dravid got going through late clips off his pads, Yuvraj through a thick edge past gully. Immediately, though, Yuvraj corrected it with a picture-perfect cover-drive. Sangakkara perhaps missed a trick by introducing Angelo Mathews before Muttiah Muralitharan, and both Yuvraj and Dravid enjoyed the gentle pace and length balls. A couple of classy shots from Dravid later, the two had added 34 in 32 deliveries even before Murali was introduced.

Yuvraj faced the first over from Murali, and showed good judgement of the topspinner and regular offbreak. Driving through the line looked easy while the two were at it. Rangana Herath - playing ahead of Ajantha Mendis - was never allowed to settle, and was restricted to bowling flat deliveries, that too only minutes before the first two session breaks.

Dravid saw off Welegedara's swing with three boundaries in one over just after lunch, which summed up how well he played. One of the them was clipped late, to the right of midwicket, the next was cover-driven all along the ground, and the third flicked to the left of midwicket - all despite the swing.

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Live Streaming Free Online from Ahmedabad Nov 16-20, 2009. Two men who weren't even supposed to be playing this Test swung out four of India's batsmen in the first half hour. Chanaka Welegedara and Dammika Prasad, with four Tests and 15 wickets between them before today, had to be drafted in because of late niggles to Nuwan Kulasekara and Thilan Thushara. Yet the pair - especially Welegedara - used the early-morning freshness to reduce India to 32 for 4. Following that, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh first counterattacked, then consolidated, and saw India through to lunch with an unbeaten 73-run stand.

Test cricket it might be, but most of the first session went at a breathtaking pace. It got off to an unorthodox start too. Instead of the usual just-outside-the-off line, Welegedara started off attacking Gautam Gambhir on middle and off. Gambhir blocked and ran, and Virender Sehwag caressed the next delivery through the covers. Another boundary came in the next over, and for a moment it started looking ominous for Sri Lanka.

But Welegedara had got the ball to swing in his first over and mixed deliveries going on with the angle. In his second, however, he got Gambhir playing for swing that wasn't, as the batsman ended up poking almost outside the line of a straight delivery and played it on. Sehwag continued attacking and succeeding until Welegedara produced a perfect inswinger; the umpire Tony Hill adjudged a perfect lbw decision, ruling that the ball hit the pad first and in front of middle and off.

Out came Sachin Tendulkar, 20 years and a day old in international cricket, at 27 for 2. Out came a perfect cover-drive first ball. And out went Tendulkar, at 31 for 3, having played outside the line of a ball that slightly held its line. With 3 for 12, Welegedara threatened a repeat of the previous Ahmedabad Test when India were shot out for 76 on the first morning.

Prasad got into action soon when VVS Laxman dragged one on, playing away from the body and done in by slight inward movement. All four wickets came attacking the stumps and Sri Lanka continued doing just that. Dravid and Yuvraj, having realised this wasn't a beast to bat on, counterattacked. Dravid got going through late clips off his pads, Yuvraj through a thick edge past gully. Immediately, though, Yuvraj corrected it with a picture-perfect cover-drive. When on 13, he edged Welegedara but took the bottom hand off bat, getting the ball to bounce short of third slip.

Kumar Sangakkara perhaps missed a trick by introducing Angelo Mathews before Muttiah Muralitharan, and both Yuvraj and Dravid enjoyed the gentle pace and length balling. A couple of classy shots from Dravid later, the two had added 34 in 32 deliveries even before Murali was introduced.

Yuvraj faced the first over from Murali. The high back lift kept everybody interested, but he showed good judgement of the topspinner and regular offbreak. The run-rated dropped a bit, but Sri Lanka didn't look like they were dictating play. Driving through the line looked easy while the two were at it.

When Rangana Herath - playing ahead of Ajantha Mendis - was introduced roughly 20 minutes before lunch, India moved into control mode. Dravid stepped out and lofted him for a six in his first over, Yuvraj hammered him through for four through midwicket in his second. Yuvraj copped one on the helmet from Prasad just before the interval, but there was little else during that partnership to encourage Sri Lanka.

After two matches in the series, the Indian fast bowlers can breathe easier with the spotlight shifting to their Australian counterparts. If India's fast men were the weak link going into the series, the death overs have indeed spelt doom for the Australian quicks.

MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina took 108 in the last 10 overs in Nagpur - Australia's worst showing since 1999 - and the 82 conceded in the last eight overs in the previous match in Vadodara was their sixth-worst.

The absence of Brett Lee (who didn't bowl his quota in Vadodara and was injured in Nagpur) and Nathan Bracken is telling. More incriminating than the figures is the manner in which the runs have come. Fulltosses, leg-side wides, half-volleys, length deliveries, and misfields have all made the job easier for India.

Sachin Tendulkar has returned early from India's tour of Sri Lanka, and will miss the Twenty20 international on Tuesday. Tendulkar left on Sunday night since he was not part of the Twenty20 squad, team manager Prakash Dixit confirmed.

Tendulkar has not been a regular member of the India's teams for the 20-over format. His only Twenty20 international, in December 2006, was on the tour of South Africa, and in 2007 he had opted out of the ICC World Twenty20 along with fellow seniors Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly. The team, led by present captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, went on to win the tournament in South Africa.

Sri Lanka finish the series with a Twenty20 international on Tuesday, the first to be held in the country, and then return to Pakistan for the Test leg of their split tour.

The last time India played Sri Lanka in an ODI series, at the end of the 2008 summer, the scores had been much lower than this series. Jayawardene recognised that Sri Lanka's batting had been poor then too, and called on the middle order to be more consistent. He also said Sri Lanka needed to clean up in the other departments.

Gary Kirsten has said that India's goal in 2009 is to be the No. 1 team in the world. India's coach, who has received praise from many in the Indian team, felt the side's biggest improvement in recent times was the way they prepared for a game.

Irfan's form has been a concern for India. Given the new ball in the last game - his only appearance on tour so far - Irfan ended up with 3 for 58 from seven overs; his first spell read 5-0-42-1 as Sanath Jayasuriya went after him. India have been using their slow bowlers in the middle overs, retaining the seamers for the Powerplays.

Yuvraj Singh has been cleared of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct by the match referee Chris Broad at a hearing after the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Yuvraj had been charged under Level 1.3 of the code, which refers to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision". He had been adjudged lbw off Nuwan Kulasekara when on 66; the ball was going on to hit the stumps but Yuvraj had got a big inside edge onto the pads which the umpire had failed to spot. He waited at the crease for a few seconds on receiving the decision, before trudging off.

The incident was reported by on-field umpires Brian Jerling and Gamini Silva, as well as third umpire Kumar Dharmasena. "After reviewing video evidence of the incident, I am of the opinion that there was no conclusive evidence that Yuvraj showed dissent at the decision," Broad said. "He did stay at the crease but the delay in departing was not excessive and I felt he showed a level of disappointment rather than dissent."

Besides Yuvraj and the three umpires, India coach Gary Kirsten and team manager Prakash Dixit were also present at the hearing.

Nuwan Kulasekara had a fantastic 2008 in ODI cricket, and his start to this year hasn't been too shabby. In six matches in 2009, he has taken 12 wickets at 13.33. With Chaminda Vaas cutting down his workload, Kulasekara has become Sri Lanka's premier quick bowler in this format. His numbers over the past year - 45 wickets at 18.86 - and his success against India in their last series - 11 wickets at 14.45 - make Kulasekara a serious threat.

When India toured Sri Lanka last, Mahendra Singh Dhoni didn't have it easy. With Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar absent and the top order struggling, Dhoni and Suresh Raina were left with plenty to do. He had it easier in India's last ODI series, against England at home, when the batsmen fired but this promises to be a sterner test. Knowing Dhoni's competitive nature, he will want to stamp his mark with the bat again.

The aura over Ajantha Mendis, who recently became the quickest bowler to 50 ODI wickets, diminished somewhat when Pakistan's batsmen handled him efficiently. Mendis picked up four wickets at 20.00 in three games without being as threatening as he was in the Asia Cup. On the favourable home pitches, though, Mendis will always be a factor.

Sachin Tendulkar has never faced Mendis in an ODI. Injury ruled him out of the last contest in Sri Lanka but his return reinforces India's top order. He averages 41.81 over the past 12 months and 42.00 in Sri Lanka. How he handles an in-form pace attack could prove a key component of this series.

Team news

Sri Lanka's selectors have retained, for the first three ODIs, the 15-man squad that beat Pakistan 2-1. Tillakaratne Dilshan's promotion to opener in Pakistan worked stupendously - he scored 255 runs, including an unbeaten 137 in the decider - and he is likely to continue in that role. Sri Lanka's batting has struggled in recent games against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but against Pakistan they put up good numbers, bar Jayawardene. Thilina Kandamby's inclusion in place of Jehan Mubarak worked wonders and he and Chamara Kapugedera will bolster the middle order. The bowlers pretty much pick themselves given their successes recently.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Thilan Thushara, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis

India are certain to go in with the three fast bowlers who did well in Dambulla last year - Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel - and possibly a fourth. In that case, it will be a toss-up between Pragyan Ojha and Praveen Kumar. Ojha will be given opportunities in this series with Harbhajan Singh, the frontline spinner, injured. Sehwag and Tendulkar will open, while a red-hot Yuvraj Singh will drop down to No. 4. Yuvraj has struggled against spin in Sri Lanka but India will hope his recent success rubs off against Murali and Mendis. Suresh Raina is likely to get the nod ahead of Rohit Sharma.

India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina/Rohit Sharma, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Praveen Kumar/Pragyan Ojha, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel.
